Tempered by business, politics, materialism, modern convenience, Roman Catholic and post Reformation traditions, the ideology and structure of modern evangelical Christianity is far removed from that of the first century Church.  Our method for choosing and training church leaders, our means for assembly—even our intentions for assembly, are different.  In short, I DON’T THINK PAUL DID IT THIS WAY.

We are materialistic; revolving around buildings and ordered with a businessman’s mind set.  In ways we are pharisaical, with demanding traditions and blanket condemnations.  In other ways we seem almost mystical, with a compulsion for empty prayers and orchestrated jubilation.  Always, we are dogmatic, crusading a cause—even when the cause is far from evangelism and the dogma is born in ignorance.  Despite our sound theology and devotion to our efforts, we seem a mere deficient, unbecoming organization, out of focus with the dynamic faith epitomized in the New Testament and practiced by the early Church.   Sadly, we more closely resemble the troubled church of Laodicea than the pristine church of Ephesus.  Herein, is an apology for reform.

This book will not tell you what the Bible says, but it will provide the necessary tools to determine that for yourself.  Dr. Allen was ordained to the ministry in 1982, and has served as the pastor of two churches.  Among other degrees, he holds a Master of Divinity and a PhD in education.
